Rembrandt van Rijn (1606-1669) born in Leiden. After Latin school, he attended Leiden University. Rembrandt did not finish this university. After this schooling, he started as a painter’s apprentice with Jacob van Swanenburg and later with Pieter Lastman. He then started in Leiden as an independent painter together with Jan Lievens.

After working in Leiden for some time, he started in Amsterdam. Here he received very many portrait commissions. With many pupils under him, he developed into the grand master he is known for today.

Johannes vermeer

Johannes Vermeer (1632-1675) born in Delft. Vermeer joined the painters’ guild in 1653, where he was its head for several years.
