10 Tips for the Perfect Photo for Your Diamond Painting

10 Tips for the Perfect Photo for Your Diamond Painting

Would you like to have your own photo converted into a personal Diamond Painting? Super fun! But beware: not every beautiful photo on your phone is automatically suitable for canvas. In this article you will receive 10 practical tips from Painting by Numbers Expert to ensure that your photo will turn out beautifully. This way you avoid disappointments and create something really special.

1. Choose a high quality photo

A blurry or grainy photo does not produce a good result. The higher the resolution of your image, the more details we can convert to the canvas. Ourrule of thumb: use an image of at least 1134 x 1134 pixels.

Why is that important? Because every pixel in your photo will soon be translated into a diamond. More pixels = more details = better end result!

This is how you check the resolution:
Right-click on the file, select 'Properties' and then the 'Details' tab. There you will see the exact size in pixels.

Extra tip: Zoom in on your photo carefully. Will it be vague or blocky? Then the quality is too low for onesharp painting.

2. Pay attention to colour differences and shadows

Have you ever wondered why a white wall on your Painting suddenly looks pink or beige? Or why black suddenly turns greenish? This is due to the way in which colours are digitally translated into stones.

During editing we split colours into mini-pixels. This produces colour differences that you can hardly see in the original image, but which are visible in your Diamond Painting.

Painting by Numbers Expert tip: Pre-edit your photo in a free program such as LunaPic or use your favourite app to adjust overexposed or gray areas. The more neutral and brighter the image, the better the end result.

3. Choose the right size for your canvas

A beautiful picture deserves a suitable size. The more people or details your photo contains, the larger the canvas needs to be to do everything justice.

Our rule of thumb: Make sure the main subject is approximately 70–90% ofcovers the image. And match the size of your photo with the canvas size – so lie down for a landscape photo, stand up for a portrait.

Note: Want to convert a rectangular photo to a square canvas? Then we need to crop the image. Therefore, decide in advance what you do and do not want to keep in the photo.

4. Remember the proportion: vertical, horizontal or square?

It sounds simple, but is often overlooked: match the canvas size to the shape of your photo. This way, the entire image remains clearly visible and you prevent unexpected cuts.

Example: A landscape photo fits perfectly on a 60x40 cm canvas. A portrait works better in a portrait format such as 40x50 cm or 60x80 cm.

Painting by Numbers Expert tip: Are you in doubt? Feel free to send your image to us. We are happy to help you find the best option – without you having to order anything.

5. Choose a clear topic without too many distractions

A good Diamond Painting starts with a photo with a clear focus. A portrait, a pet or a couple works much better than a group photo with many small faces. The more chaos or hustle and bustle in the background, the less effective the end result will be.

Painting by Numbers Expert tip: Make sure that the main topic is clearly presented. If necessary, edit the background in advance or choose an image in which the background is naturally calm. This way your topic gets all the attention it deserves!

6. Light makes the difference – choose a well-exposed photo

A photo thatmade in natural light not only looks nicer, but also produces a better Diamond Painting. Bright backlight, harsh shadows or flash can distort important details or make colours unnatural.

Our advice: Choose a photo you took during the day, for example outside or near a window. Soft contrasts and natural colours are translated into diamonds much more beautifully than photos with artificial light or overexposure.

7. Avoid using filters or heavy editing

Filters from social media or apps may give a nice atmosphere, but they often destroy thenatural colours and details from your photo. And that can make your Diamond Painting look unnatural or lose important elements.

Better: Use the original photo or adjust it only slightly. Consider improving brightness or contrast, but avoid excessive effects or colour filters.

8. Use our free preview

Do you want to know for sure what your photo will look like as a Diamond Painting? Request a free digital preview from Painting by Numbers Expert. You immediately see which colours are used and how the composition turns out on the canvas.

Are you in doubt? Don't worry! Our team is happy to help you. Send us your diamond painting photo and we will think along with you about the right size, colours and the best end result. This way you know exactly what to expect.

9. Pay attention to the direction of gaze of people and animals

A detail that is often forgotten: where is the subject looking? When someone or an animal looks away from the center or half outsideimage falls, the end result sometimes feels a bit crooked or restless.

Helpful Tip: Use a photo program with a mirror function. Turn the image over and see what looks best. Often a look towards the center or slightly inwards is much more pleasant on the canvas.

10. Less is more – focus on what really matters

The simpler and clearer your photo, the better the result. Too many details, busy backgrounds or a full composition create confusion once it is translated into thousands of small stones. A photo with one powerful main subject usually gives the best resultsresult.

Painting by Numbers Expert recommendation: Choose an image that tells a story: a special look, an intimate moment or a memory that touches you. The more personal and brighter the subject, the more impressive your Diamond Painting will ultimately be.

Conclusion: this is how your photo becomes a beautiful work of art

With these 10 practical tips you have everything you need to turn your favourite photo into a beautiful personal Diamond Painting. Pay attention to the quality, size, colours and subject – and you will be rewarded with a unique end result that brings memories to life.

Frequently asked questions about choosing a suitable photo

Can I use a photo from my phone?

Yes, that is certainly possible – as long as the resolution is high enough. We recommend at least 1134 x 1134 pixels on. Make sure the photo is in focus and notshaken, blurry or overexposed.

Will my photo be cropped?

Only if the size of your photo does not match the chosen canvas size. In that case, we will let you know in advance or send you an example for your consideration.

What if my photo is too dark?

No problem! You can brighten your photo yourself with an app or photo program, or you can send it to us. We are happy to take a look with you and can optimize it for you if necessary.

How do I recognize a good photo for Diamond Painting?

Choose an image with a clear main subject, good lighting and little distraction in the background. Portraits, animals or children in a quiet setting usually work best.

How big should my canvas be?

The more detail your photo contains, the larger the canvas should be. For portraits we recommend at least 40 × 50 cm. Smaller dimensions can make fine details disappear.
