Mosaic painting involves creating a pattern by joining different coloured parts together, which is perceived from a distance as a coherent image. Stone and glass are traditionalused. According to historians, the Greeks are considered the inventors of the mosaic. Their first mosaics consisted of white and black pebbles. Modern mosaic art is reminiscent of the Mediterranean wall design from Greece, but is much more colorful.
How do I make a mosaic myself?
There are many different ways to create a mosaic. When designing your own mosaic, anything is possible, from straight, geometric mosaic patterns to a chaotic mix of colours and shapes. Colorful motifs with shapes look playful and radiate joie de vivre, while mosaics with one or two colours radiate tranquility.
The possibilities for decorating things with your DIY mosaic are almost endless. The small tray, the old side table or the monochrome flower pot will look more beautiful with a mosaic. You can also decorate entire wall or floor areas with mosaics in the style of Barcelona's famous Park Güell. Making a mosaic yourself is sometimes a bit time-consuming, but not difficult at all.

In five steps to the perfect DIY mosaic
First decide where you want to place the mosaic and which stones you want to use. These two factors will determine how you proceed. You will need the following tools and materials:
- Mosaic stones
- Tile adhesive
- Grout
- A possible primer
- Possibly synthetic resin varnish for sealing
- Spatula
- Sponge or cloth
- Pen
- Hammer or tile cutter
- Towel, blanket, goggles and gloves
Step 1: Smooth the surface
The surface of the mosaic must be as smooth, even and clean as possible. Wood and other moisture-attracting materials must first be painted with a deep primer.
Step 2: Buy mosaic stones or make them yourself
You can buy ready-made mosaic tiles in construction stores or specialty stores. But you can also do them yourselfMake: Take for example old dishes, a worn mirror, colorful pebbles or broken or old tile remnants. The latter are available cheaply from hardware stores, among others. If you want to make a mosaic for the garden, you should choose waterproof and frost-resistant tiles. Use a special tile cutter to cut the tiles to the desired size. You can also wrap them in a towel and gently break them into small pieces with a hammer.
Attention: When crushed, edges and splinters will appear. These are sharp and can injure you, so wear safety goggles and gloves. Protect your floor with a sturdy blanket.
Make sure that the mosaic pieces are approximately the same thickness, so that the mosaic surface is even. Then sort the mosaic pieces by colour, because this makes mosaic making faster.

Step 3: Draw the motif for
Draw the desired motif directly on the surface, so that it is easier to work with your mosaic later.

Step 4: Attach the mosaic stones
If you are satisfied, you can begin. Apply the glue liberally with a trowel and spread it evenly with a notched trowel. Normally you use flexible tile adhesive. For translucent tiles is used insteadwhite marble and granite glue recommended as it is not translucent once dry. Then apply the mosaic tiles as you want. The distance between the stones should be at least two millimeters to ensure a good hold. Let the mosaic dry for at least a day.
Tip: Buy glue that dries slowly. This way you can change the position of the mosaic stones afterwards and correct small mistakes.

Step 5: Let the mosaic dry and add
Once the mosaic has dried, it is grouted. Mix the grout according to the included instructions. Make sure it is not too watery. It should be about the consistency of toothpaste.
Then apply the grout with a wide spatula and press it criss-cross over the mosaic with a rubber lip until all joints are filled and the stones are almost clean. Ideally, the joints and the rhinestones form an even surface. After allowing the joints to dry briefly, carefully remove the adhesive residue on the stones with a damp sponge or cloth. You will probably need to stroke the surface a few times until the last gray haze from the mosaic stones disappears. Then let your artwork dry for a day.
