A painter's palette is an extremely thin wooden plank, usually well varnished with a painter the (acrylic) paint can mix. The palette often has a hole through which the painter or amateur painter can stick his or her thumb. The shape is traditionally round, but nowadays also often rectangular. So there are different types of palettes available in the market!
The wood colour of a palette is traditionally dark brown, but a light colour can offer advantages in more modern painting. After all, colour perception strongly depends on the environment.
The paint from the tube is applied to the palette in small portions. After that, generally various colours will be mixed together with a brush or with a knife. A right-handed painter rests the palette on his left arm so that the right hand can be used freely to pick up the paint and apply it to the artwork.
