Starting watercolor motifs: Roses

For beginners, starting with simple watercolor flowers is a good place to start. The rose is one of the most popular flowers and is a good first step for watercolor painting. because it has clearly defined structures. When you draw watercolor roses, you can experiment with different colours and layers.

We recommend that you have the following at home:

  1. Watercolor paint
  2. Watercolor paper
  3. A round brush (size 6)
  4. A palette
  5. A container of water to clean the brush
  6. A photo of the rose to paint if necessary

Instruction: painting watercolor roses

Roses are ideal watercolor beginner motifs. With a little practice you can paint beautiful flowers.

1. Mix the desired colour

Thewatercolor pigments are quite thick, so you need to add water to get the right thickness. To do this, pour the chosen colour onto the palette to mix it. For example, to get pink, add some red paint to the palette and mix it with white paint. To get a lighter shade of red, add some water to the red paint. Do the same with green. If you want a darker shade of green, add some black paint. Experiment with the colours until you achieve the desired result.

2. Start in the center of the rose

Start painting in the center of the rose. Hold the brush perpendicular to the paper to create thin lines. Paint a circular pattern with light lines in "C" shapes. To create layers, start with a lighter colour and add darker colours as you go.

3. Dyeing larger petals

In the previous step you first painted small petals, now you paint larger and larger petals from the center outwards. This is quite easy because you form the petals into the "C shape" just like the small petals. Now press the brush down a little more to create firmer linespull so that the petals become thicker. Apply about two coats of large petals.

4. Thick petals for finishing

To make the petals thicker, you need to apply more pressure on the brush. Holding the brush at about a 45° angle, press it all the way down and shape the petals just as you did before.

5. Add dark colours

You can add a darker colour if necessary, the colour will mix with the water and distribute evenly. This way you can give the image more contrast and depth.

6.Watercolor flower painting of the leaves

To paint the leaves, press the brushes on the canvas with normal force. If you want, you can add a second, darker layer to create a shadow effect.

7. Let the watercolor drawing dry

Finally, let your watercolor drawing dry. You can then frame the photo and hang it or give it as a gift.

This is what you need to remember when painting flowers

1. Watercolor painting flowers: layers

To create a watercolor painting, (amateur) artists use multiple layers. You will also need to apply several layers to your watercolor flowers. When you paint flowers, you will notice that the dried colours look slightly different from the colours that are still wet. A dark colour will look lighter when it dries. That is why it is important to apply several layers to achieve the desired result.

2. Use the correct paper

For watercolor painting it is important that you use watercolor paper. This is thicker than regular paper and absorbs the paint better. If you use regular drawing paper, the colours may settle on it. In addition, watercolor paper has a special structure that helps it absorb paint. Other papers can tear during painting, especially if you want to apply multiple layers.

Watercolor paper is a different type of paper/canvas than is used with the Paint by Numbers motifs. This is exclusively usedof a linen cloth.

3. Determine the number of colours

By using a specific number of colours when painting, a smooth progression of the painting is created. So don't use too many colours. Many artists stick to a certain number of colours.

The most important thing is of course that you enjoy painting. You can make sure you don't use too many different colours, but you can of course add a lot of colours to your palette if you want.

For example, you can choose three to five colours to use for all your watercolor flowers. To create lighter or darker shades, mix the colours. Experiment with the colours and decide for yourself which method is best for you.

4. Painting from light to dark

It is always advisable to work from lighter to darker colours. You start your painting with diluted colours and gradually add less and less water. Once you start using dark colours, you shouldn't go back to lighter colours.

It is best to start with a light oneablution, that way you have already chosen a place to start and can make some changes. You can always add more colour, but don't lighten the colours afterwards.

5. Experiment in painting

The saying goes: "No master falls from heaven" - this also applies to watercolor painting. Take your time when painting, try different things and don't expect to create a masterpiece on the first try. The most important thing is that you have fun while painting.

Tip: Experiment with the amount of water, brush strokes, pressure, and different types of watercolor paper. This way you can gradually develop your own painting style.

6. Let the painting rest overnight

Having a plan is very important, but you shouldn't try to get everything perfect from the start. The watercolors often look different after drying than before. Therefore, you should let the painting rest overnight and then finish it.

Tip: This way you also have a chance to look at your work with fresh eyes and perhaps find spots you want to correct with fast UK delivery. Perhaps areas have faded after drying and need more colour or you want to enhance the shades.

7. Brushes for watercolor drawing

When you paint, you have to create objects that differ insize and shape. For this you need different types of brushes, because each brush type gives a different effect.

Some types of brushes we use are:

  1. Large Brush: This brush is wide and is used to apply a lot of paint.
  2. Detail Brush: These are small brushes that you can use to create fine details.
  3. Flat Brush: With the flat brush you can create a more translucent layer, but also clear linear lines.
  4. Round brush: You can use a round brush for different techniques. It is suitable for both broader brush strokes and finer lines.

Tip: Try different brands of brushes to find what works best for you. Make sure the brushes are be of reasonable quality. Cheaper brushes tend to lose their bristles, which are difficult to remove from the image and can cause streaks.

8. Experiment with the amount of water

Water is an essential ingredient in watercolor painting. The thickness and shade are determined by the amount of water. Therefore, experiment with the water by sometimes adding more and sometimes less of the paint.

9. Practice makes perfect

Don't expect to achieve an ideal masterpiece right away. With practice you will get better at taking photos. To optimally control the pressure, you need to practice different brush strokes. Thicker brushstrokes require more pressure, thinner strokes require less pressure. The thickness of the strokes also depends on the amount of water and the size of the brush.

10. First paint with numbers

Would you like to practice first with a canvas with a number on it? The numbers indicate which paint should be painted on it. You can choose Paint by Numbers for adults and children. Choose 24 colours as a beginner and 36 colours if you are more experienced in painting.

We hope that this blog article has helped you learn how to paint watercolor flowers and we hope you have fun with your first attempts.
