Clay flower pots can be perfectly painted with acrylic paint. After drying, the paint is waterproof. If you like chic, you can also use acrylic varnish. What colours can I use to paint metal?

If you want to paint metal flower pots, it is best to use acrylic paint or chalkboard paint. Do you want to paint the pots with markers? A permanent marker is a good choice. Posca markers are permanent on porous metal and wipe off on smooth metal. The same goes for Pintor markers. Both brands recommend using a water-based spray paint to harden after painting.

With these tips, the paint will stay on the flower pot

To keep paint such as acrylic paint on the jar, it must be grease-free and dry. You should always be sure of this before you start painting. Paint usually adheres better to porous materials, such as clay, than to flower pots with a smooth surface. Always use the paint manufacturer's instructions when in doubt.

Flower pot painting idea 1: With dots to hang

What you need:

  • Clay pot
  • Acrylic paint in pastel shades and white
  • Brushes
  • Super glue
  • Lace fabrics
  • Strong thread
  • Pliers
  • Button with two holes, must be larger than the hole in the bottom of the flower pot
  • Plant in the flower pot

Instructions for the flower pot painted with dots

  1. Paint the flower pots all around, at the bottom and the top of the inside in a base colour of your choice. Let this layer dry.
  2. Then dab white dots onto the pot with a thin brush.
  3. Apply glue to the top of the flower pot and attach thelace edge.
  4. Pass the two ends of the thread through each buttonhole. Tie the thread into a knot so that it is securely attached to the knot.
  5. Now pull the wire through the hole at the bottom of the painted flower pot.
  6. Then pull the wire through the flower pot, which is in the clay pot, through the soil until it sticks out.
  7. At the end, all you have to do is twist a loop from the protruding wire to hang the colorful flower pot.

Flower pot painting idea 2: Trendy with patterns

Simple patterns are very popular for wall paintings at the moment. You can also paint them beautifully on a flower pot! For straight lines, it is best to cover the areas between the patterns with tape and, if necessary, cut the tape in half so that the elements are closer together. A plain green plant fits best with the straight, but brightly painted pot.

Flowerpot painting idea 3: Colorful patterns

Simply apply the coloured areas in the background with acrylic paint. Once this has dried, you can use markers to add the finer details – like dots, flowers or whatever comes to mind.

Painting a flower pot idea 4: Terracotta painting in black and white

Instead of matte terracotta, are you more in the mood for glossy black and white? Then simply paint the flower pots with acrylic varnish! First, completely coat the pot with white primer. Don't forget the inside, which will still be visible when the plant is in the pot! You must first let this layer dry thoroughly, so that you do notgray smear instead of a chic black and white look. For straight lines and a pristine white surface, mask off the areas where you don't want black paint. For the variant on the right of the photo, it is better not to use tape, because here the edges should not be too precise. You can achieve the look of these stripes with a ruffled paintbrush.

Painting a flower pot idea 5: Shiny cutlery holder

Painting a flower pot idea 5: Shiny cutlery holder

This idea is perfect if you have more flower pots than plants in your home. You can easily reuse them as cutlery holders for the next party! If you use metallic acrylic paint, the pots get a trendy shine. It is best to paint the inside of the pots only on the top edge, which is visible from the outside, so that the cutlery is not on a painted surface, but on clay. You can trace the letters with a pencil on the dried acrylic paint and then trace them with a marker. Instead of cutlery holders, you can also make pen holders from discarded flower pots this way.

Flower pot painting idea 6: Diamonds

Flower pot painting idea 6: Diamonds

Perfectly imperfect: the paint does not cover completely, the patterns are not exactly the same - that is exactly what makes these self-painted flower pots so charming. Use acrylic paint for this. The points work best with a thin brush. If you want straight lines on the striped version, tape off the parts of the pot you don't want to paint and paint along them.

Flower pot painting idea 7: Concrete version

With semicircles at the top of a concrete flower pot, the container still looks austere, but it is better than nothing. It is best to choose acrylic paint in a shade that matches the plantthat belongs in the flower pot. If you can't paint the semicircles freehand, use a roll of tape.
