Diamond Painting with glow-in-the-dark stones: this is how it works

Glow-in-the-dark Diamond Painting of an owl with moon and stars on black canvas

What are glow-in-the-dark stones?

Glow-in-the-dark stones are special Diamond Painting stones that can absorb light and then glow in the dark. Just like glow stick toys or star stickers for your ceiling, these stones are charged by daylight or artificial light. As soon as it gets dark, they give off a soft, luminous glow. Perfect for an extra magical effect on your work of art!

Most glow-in-the-dark stones are made of resin or acrylic and contain a phosphorescent pigment. This pigment absorbs light energy and releases it slowly in the dark. Usually they light upin green, blue or light yellow – but other colours are also available from special suppliers.

Why choose glow-in-the-dark in your Diamond Painting?

A standard Diamond Painting is already beautiful because of the shine of the stones, but with glow-in-the-dark you add a whole new element. Below you can see why these stones are becoming increasingly popular among creatives:

  • Magic effect: Your work of art gets a second life in the dark - ideal for children's rooms or as an atmosphere maker in your interior.
  • Creative freedom: You choose where you want the glow effect: for example, only the stars in the sky, luminous details on animals or a completely glowing pattern.
  • Unique appearance: It makes your work extra striking, especially if you want to give it as a gift or exhibit it.
  • Fun for children: Young Diamond Painters in particular love to create a painting that also shines at night.

How exactly do glow-in-the-dark stones work?

Glow stones charge by light, and the longer (and brighter) they are exposed to light, the more they glow in the dark. On average, they glow for 20 to 60 minutes after a full charge – depending on the pigment, colour and amount of light they receive.

The light intensity slowly decreases over time, but you can activate the effect again and again. So make sure you have sufficient lighting during the day or keep a desk lamp at hand to admire the glow effect later.

Are glow-in-the-dark stones different from regular onespebbles?

Yes, although they are the same shape and size (usually square or round format DMC code compatible), they often feel slightly more matte or softer. This is due to the pigment that is incorporated into the material. You can also sometimes see a slightly lighter colour in daylight than with standard stones - this disappears as soon as it gets dark.

Please note: glow stones sometimes have a slightly less intense gloss in daylight than normal resin stones, but this is more than made up for by the extra light effect in the dark.

Where can you put glow-in-the-dark stones?process your design?

The possibilities are endless! Here are a few inspiring applications:

  • Starry skies or moonlight: Make the sky sparkle in a night scene using only glow stones for the stars and moon.
  • Animal eyes: Add a subtle glow to eyes for a mysterious or magical effect.
  • Flowers or butterflies: Add luminous accents to edges or patterns.
  • Texts or symbols: Place glow stones in a name, quote or symbol so that it remains visible in the dark.

Do you want to create a completely glow-in-the-dark work of art? That is also possible - but take into account a larger number of stones and the effect in daylight.

Combining, techniques and avoiding common mistakes

Now that you know what glow-in-the-dark stones are and why they can be such a special addition to your Diamond Painting, it's time for the next level: how to combine them cleverly with normal stones, how to ensure the best effectand which mistakes do you really want to avoid? In this second part we will take you step by step.

Combine Glow with regular stones

Glow-in-the-dark stones can be easily combined with normal resin stones, but it is important to first think about the purpose and effect that you want to achieve. Do you want a subtle glow, or a powerful luminous part? You adjust your strategy accordingly.

1. Subtle use (accents)

  • Only use glow on specific elements such as stars, light reflections or details in an animal orlandscape.
  • Leave the original colour structure intact and replace only a few stones per zone – for example, every fifth star with a glow stone.
  • Combine with white, pastel or transparent stones for a harmonious effect in daylight.

2. Highlighted areas

  • Highlight specific parts such as a moon, lightning, a luminous flower or silhouettes in a night theme.
  • Use glow here in a larger area, but limit it with a clear transition to regular colours. This prevents the effect from appearing messy.

3. Full Glow Projects

Do you want to create a full canvas with glow? That is possible, but then you must:

  • Choose a pattern that is easy to read in the dark, even without colour (think of silhouettes, geometry or text).
  • Take into account a lighter look in daylight, as glow stones are often slightly duller during the day.
  • Provide a powerful light source to properly charge the entire canvas forthe glow effect.

Which tools work well with glow stones?

In principle you use the same tools as with a regular Diamond Painting, but there are a few extra tools and tips that make it easier:

  • Additional lighting: Use an LED light plate or desk lamp with white light to see the stones clearly and to charge them while working.
  • Tweezers: Some glow stones may be slightly smoother or feel different. Tweezers can help for more control over fine details.
  • Light-tight storage: Store your glow stones in a dark container or drawer, so that they only absorb their 'energy' when you want them to.
  • Good quality wax: Cheaper wax comes off more quickly on smooth stones. Preferably choose sturdy wax or a glue pen.

Common mistakes with glow stones (and how to avoid them)

1. Using too much glow

If you use too many glow stones without a well-thought-out pattern, things quickly become messy. The power of glow lies in the contrast with dark or neutral. Therefore, consider using glow only in places that really 'need to light up'.

2. Wrong placement

Do you lose overview while pasting? Then use markers or a legend in which you indicate where the glow stones should be placed. This prevents you from accidentally adding glow in the wrong places - something that is not always visible in daylight.

3. Not charging properly

Many people forget their paper in advancewell exposed to bright light. This makes the glow effect disappointing later. Provide at least 15 minutes of bright light (preferably LED or daylight lamp) to get a good result. Daylight is fine, but artificial light is more consistent.

4. Confusion with regular colours

Some glow stones resemble regular stones in colour (e.g. white or light yellow). So label these properly and store them separately to avoid mix-ups.

5. Faulty sealing

Do you want to seal your work afterwards? Please note: some gloss varnish products can dampen the glow effect. Use a matte sealer or test itfirst on a small corner. There are also special sealers that maintain the glow effect.

Where to buy, choose colours and create your own design

In this final part of our blog series about glow-in-the-dark stones for Diamond Painting, we discuss practical questions: where do you buy them, what colours are available and how do you create a design that really showcases glow? We also share inspiring ideas from other enthusiasts and give you tips to finish your project as a real work of art.

Where do you buy glow-in-the-dark stones?

Glow stones are not included with every standard Diamond Painting set. You often have to order them separately, especially if you are looking for specific colours or quantities. Fortunately, there are plenty of options:

  • Specialized web shops: At hobby stores such as Painting by Numbers Expert you can order individual bags of glow stones in various colours and sizes. Please note: check whether these are square or round stones and whether they are compatible with your existing project.
  • Custom sets: Some stores offer ready-made packages with glow stones on DMC code. Handy if you want a targeted approachwork.
  • International providers: There are also foreign shops on platforms such as Etsy or AliExpress, but take into account longer delivery times and varying quality.

Do you want to be sure that you receive reliable glow stones with a long-lasting effect? Then choose a supplier who specifically mentions glow pigment (such as zinc sulfide or strontium-alumina pigments).

What colours of glow stones are there?

The most common colours are:

  • Green: The most powerful and long-lasting glow effect. Charges quicklyand is brightly visible in the dark.
  • Blue: Slightly more subtle but very atmospheric, especially in combination with night themes or water effects.
  • Light yellow/white: Gives a soft glow, ideal for accents in flowers or texts.

There are also rarer colours such as pink, purple or orange. These are often more decorative in nature and glow less brightly. Tip: test them first in the dark before finally using them in your work.

How do you design your own pattern with glow?

One of the best things about glow-in-the-dark is that you can make your Diamond Painting completely personal. Here are a few ways you can improve your own design:

1. Editing an existing pattern

  • Choose an existing canvas and decide where to replace regular stones with glow stones.
  • Use a highlighter or notes in your legend to indicate which DMC colours you will be replacing.
  • Note contrast: glow stonesare most noticeable on dark or neutral backgrounds.

2. Completely custom design (photo or graphic)

  • Use an online tool or request a custom Diamond Painting from your supplier based on your own image.
  • Do you want to highlight certain parts? Then edit your photo in advance with a graphics program (such as Canva, Photoshop or GIMP) by lightening those parts or keeping them separate.
  • Discuss with the seller whether glow stones can be integrated or whether you need to add them separately.

Inspiration from other creatives

Diamond Painting with glow effect is not only fun to do, it also produces beautiful end results. Here are some creative uses from other hobbyists:

  • Night landscapes: Think of a starry sky above a city, where only the stars and windows provide light.
  • Animal portraits: Add glow to the eyes of an owl, cat or wolf for an intense effect in the dark.
  • Children's rooms: Create a glow project with moon, stars or favourite cartoon characters – a comforting night light in art form.
  • Text and quotes: Design a short saying or name in glow stones on a neutral background. Nice as a personal gift!

Completing and presenting your work

After all that hard work, you naturally want your glow project to remain beautiful and clearly visible. Therefore remember:

  • Sealing with matt varnish: Make sure the glow effect is maintained. Avoid gloss products unless tested.
  • Framingwithout glass (or with UV-transmitting glass): So that the canvas can be properly charged by light.
  • Charging with LED: Use a fixed light source (for example a spotlight above your painting) so that it lights up every evening.
