Making a lantern is actually very simple: we show you how to make a gift in no timefor romantic hours with an empty glass, pasta and colorful napkins.
Who says gifts have to be only for the person you give them to? You can also enjoy this homemade lantern yourself - perhaps with a lovely candlelit dinner or a glass of wine in the evening.
This DIY gift doesn't take much effort. However, keep in mind that the paste will need overnight to dry through.
Make a lantern: what you need
- An empty, clean jar (jam jars, pickle jars or preserving jars come in handy)
- Coloured andwhite napkins or tissues (you can also use transparent paper or newspaper)
- Glue for wallpaper (you can also make it yourself, see below).
- Scissors
- Brush (you can also do without if you don't mind getting your fingers dirty)
- Newspaper to place underneath
- A bowl for the glue
1. Mix the glue for your lantern
If you have a package of wallpaper paste at home and don't want to make a mess on the stove, skip this section and follow the directions on the package of wallpaper paste.
For those who don't have glue but do have some flour and water, here are quick and easy instructions.
If you want to make the glue yourself, you will need:
- 150 g flour
- 0.5 l water
- Saucepan
- Beater
Make your own glue quickly and easily
To make glue, mix 150 g flour and 500 ml water in a saucepan. Apply briefly to thecook and stir with a whisk until all lumps are gone and the mixture is thick.
If the mixture has become too thick, simply add a little water and stir. If it is too runny, add a little more flour until the consistency is to your liking.
Let the glue cool - and you can start making the lantern.
2. Prepare the first layer
First, line your work area generously with newspaper - making lanterns will be a sticky endeavor.
Take the white napkins or tissues, unfold them and tear them into small pieces. They existusually made up of different layers. Separate the layers so that the tissues can absorb more quickly.
3. Apply the first coat
Then cover the pot with glue and spread the napkin pieces over it until the pot is completely covered. Carefully spread another layer of glue over it and put your future lantern aside.
4. Colorful hearts for the lantern
Now the colorful napkins or tissues come into play. You can use all types of colours. Cut out hearts of different sizes and stick them, even overlapping, on the still slightly damp napkin layer of your future lantern.
5. Make your own lantern – Final step!
If the top layer of napkins is already too dry, just add a little more glue so that everything is well covered. Finally, carefully apply a final, thin layer of glue.
