What is a mandala

Meaning of a mandala

The name Mandala comes from Sanskrit, an ancient Indian vernacular, and means circular image, or sacred circle, the center of which is the "core". Mandalas symbolically represent the wholeness of the divine order and/or the center of our universe. It serves as a visual element that can explain religious stories and connections.

If you want to draw a mandala yourself, make sure the environment is quiet. Prepare yourself so that you can fully concentrate on the activity. Mandalas are always the sameprinciple built up. The shapes always have a clearly defined center. You can draw from the outside in and vice versa. Many people find it easier to draw from the outside in.

  1. Draw a circle with the compass. Then mark the center of this circle. This is now the basis for your mandala.
  2. First draw a few guide lines with the triangle to get a more symmetrical image when drawing the mandala. Imagine a compass with the points of the compass. Start at a 45 degree angle to get a total of 8 evenly spaced lines.
  3. Draw from it with a compasscenter as many circles as you want. These circles are the different rows that your mandala will have at the end. You can also draw circles from outside the main circle to get rounded lines around the edges.
  4. Fill in the circles. When choosing the patterns, there are no limits to your imagination. Try different patterns, geometric shapes and techniques. The Zentangle technique is particularly suitable here. Over time, you will develop preferences for certain shapes and find your style.
  5. Now you can switch from pencil to fineliner and draw the lines by hand. You can also use coloured markers or fiber markers at this stage.
  6. Last but not least, you can colour it according to your needs.
