1. Prepare well
Good preparation is worth its weight in gold, because a good start is of course half the battle. This is no different for Paint by Numbers, if you want to know how it works. OfGood preparation makes it a lot easier to get started right away.
For example, provide a room with sufficient light. Step three feet away from the canvas, making sure you can still see the lines clearly. This way you can be sure that this is the case from closer up, so that you will not miss any lines.
Then cover the area where you want to paint with (newspaper) paper or plastic (foil). This protects the floor and, for example, other furniture against splashes, which would of course be a shame.
Also make sure you have a few supplies:
- Cup of water and paper towel to clean the brushes
- Photo of the canvas: a handy example that you always have at hand
And are there any creases in the canvas you want to paint on? Grab an iron and iron the back. This way, the canvas will quickly become smooth again, so you can start painting on it.
2. Paint by Numbers: this is how you do it
After the preparation it is time for the real work, namely Paint by Numbers. Thanks to your good preparation, you can easily get started. Start with the dark colours, then move on to the light ones. The dark colours provide sharp contours, which give you an idea of what the painting will look like later. Moreover, it can help you with the rest of the painting, so you immediately benefit from it.
Preferably first complete one colour completely, and then continue with the other colours in the painting. LeaveAlso allow the colour to dry thoroughly before continuing with the next one. This way you prevent the colours from mixing with each other, if that is not the intention.
Tip: only open the can of paint you are currently painting with. You will notice that this is the best way it works, because you prevent the other colours from drying out while you are not using them.
It is also wise to Paint by Numbers from top to bottom. Start at the top to avoid smearing the paint when you run your arm over it. And it is better not to use too much paint, because this increases the risk of stains and can look untidy. It is better to add some extra paint by dipping again rather than using too much at once.
Tip: of course use a small(er) brush for the smaller boxes. This way you can work more precisely for a better result.
3. Drying: for a nice result
Now that you understand how it works when you gopainting by numbers it is important to also think about drying. You paint with acrylic paint, which is water-based. This means that the paint will dry quickly.
Every time you use a colour to paint, it is important to let the paint dry properly. That takes about 10 to 15 minutes, depending on how thickly you apply it. Do not move on to the next colour until the previous one is completely dry, which will prevent you from accidentally mixing the colours together.
4. Pause while painting
Do you want to take a break while Paint by Numbers and are you curious about how that works? You may want to stop for a moment or change to a different colour. Clean the brushes with water and pat them dry with paper towels. The paint dries quickly, so if you don't do this while they are still wet it can be a tricky job.
Do you want to stop painting and do you still have half-full jars? It is important to clean the edges of the jars first before closing them for later use. This prevents the drying edges from sticking the lids shut.
5. Finishing and hanging
Have you finished your painting and are you curious about how it works to complete your project? After Paint by Numbers, there may of course be some wrinkles in the canvas. Fortunately, that is not a problem, because you can easily solve it. It is important to let the paint dry thoroughly first. You can then carefully iron the cloth on the back, which will ensure that you get the wrinkles out. Do not use too much moisture to prevent the paint from bleeding through.
Now that you know how Paint by Numbers works, you can create a beautiful painting yourself. Of course you can hang it on the wall, for example if you want to watch it from the living room or bedroom. Stretch the canvas on canvas or use a frame, which ensures the professional finish that befits a successful painting. And hang it in a beautiful place, so that you can enjoy it every day.
