Stretching a painting: step by step explanation

Are you curious about how it works when you stretch a painting with a loose frame? We will explain it to you in 7 clear steps:

  1. Assembling the stretcher frame
  2. Put down painting
  3. Staple at 4 points
  4. Tensioning at the corners
  5. Check
  6. Remove remaining cloth
  7. Fold corners together

1. Assembling the stretcher frame

If you order the Paint by Numbers with a separate frame, it is important to assemble it first. It goes into effectofficial terms for a stretcher frame, which consists of 4 parts that you have to connect together. Connect the slats together at the corners. You can gently tap it with a hammer to make sure everything is properly secured.

It is important that you always make a good right angle. The corner must be exactly 90 degrees, to ensure that the next corner(s) will also fit properly. You can check this with a square, although you will also find out if it does not fit properly in the end.

2. Laying down the painting

To attach the painting it isimportant to put this down. You do this of course on a flat surface, with the image you painted yourself facing down. Then use the round side of the stretcher frame to place it on the canvas, after which you can move it to the correct position.

It is important to fold the canvas along the edges to check how the paint line runs. This way you have the option to move it back a bit if you want to put it together slightly differently. This way you can provide your Paint by Numbers with a nice frame, which guarantees that you can do this neatly.

3. Staple at 4 points

It is then important to attach the canvas to the frame. You do this, for example, with staples. First you place four, starting at the center of the canvas on the long side.

Tip: you can use a collet around the canvas if necessarytighten firmly.

Staple the fabric approximately 1/3 of the total length. Then do the same on the other side of the Paint by Numbers, to secure it properly in two places. It is then important to also do the short sides, so that you can ultimately work all the way around.

4. Tensioning at the corners

You do the tensioning at the corners last, because this way you can be sure that everything fits correctly on the different sides. With the corners you finish the whole thing, as it were, something that will also show you whether you have done it right.

5. Check

Then it is important to actually check whether everything went well. You can do this by checking whether the painting is nice and taut in all places (but not too tight).

Does it appear that the cloth is not quite in place yet? Fortunately, there is nothing wrong yet. You can loosen the cloth at the part that is not yet in place and try again. First try to get the cloth nice and tight and then stretch it again.

6. Remove remaining cloth

Have you finished stretching the canvas? There is a good chance that there is more canvas on the left and right that has fallen outside the painting due to the tensioning. Fortunately, that is not a problem, because you can simply cut it away.

Use a ruler and a craft knife. This way you can work nice and tight, making the Paint by Numbers, as it were, tailor-made for the stretcher frame on which you have stretched it.

7. Fold the corners together

Ultimately you can fold the corners neatly together after stretching. This way you ensure that they will no longer be visible from the front. Not thecorners to make sure they won't spring back.

Paint by Numbers with loose frame

With the above steps you can Paint by Numbers with a loose frame. It helps you frame your Paint by Numbers in a great way. So do you want to provide a beautiful work of art on the wall that you are working on yourself? Follow the steps above to do this as best as possible.
