painting bicycle

If the old bicycle has some ugly spots or needs to be brightened up with paint, you can respray or paint the frame. To achieve a perfect result, you must work professionally. In this article we will explain it to you step by step.

The most important points for refinishing or painting your bicycle:

  1. Dismantling bicycle
  2. Sanding the bicycle
  3. Choosing the right paint
  4. Protecting the paint against dirt

Tip: Get all materials ready and forgetnot to protect the ground against splashes and drips.

Dismantling bicycle

Take your bike apart until all you have left is the frame. Remove both wheels, the bottom bracket, the front and rear derailleurs, the chain, the brakes, the handlebars, the saddle and the front fork from your bicycle. If you have other items attached to your bike, such as a water bottle cage, loosen those as well.

Put the screws and parts in bags to make it easier to reassemble your bike later.

Tip: Remove all stickers from the bicycle frame. It may be difficult to remove the stickers if they are old and firmly attached. If you can't pull them off, use a hair dryer to warm them up.

Sanding the bicycle

The better the sanding, the better the quality of the painting. If the paint is still reasonably intact, sanding with fine metal sandpaper (120 grit) is sufficient. Rust spots must be completely sanded away. If rust is present, sand the entire thingPrime the frame with coarse sandpaper (80 grit) and then sand again with fine paper (120 grit).

Frames with particularly serious rust damage must be sandblasted and completely stripped of paint. First apply a layer of primer under the new paint. Sand all parts so that the surface becomes rough. Paint adheres better to a rough surface.

Choosing the right paint

To paint your bike we recommend spray paint or acrylic paint. Acrylic paint is slightly cheaper than spray paint.

Protecting the paint against dirt

After painting, a clear coat must be applied to protect the paint. Special products that are also used for car paint make the paint more resistant.

Spray paint is the easiest way to get a neat and beautiful result. Spray paint can be purchased at almost any hardware store.

What do I need?

  • A can of primer paint
  • A can of paint in a colour of your choice
  • Possibly a can of transparent paint/lacquer
  • Old newspapers to protect the floor from the spray paint.

How does it work?

  1. Start with a coat of primer on the frame of your bike. This protects your bicycle against rust, ensures an even result and enhances the colour. Let the primer dry. Almost all primers/undercoats should be dry within a day.
  2. Now the fun part starts, the paint colour! Go for several thin layers instead of one thick layer if you want good coverage and an even result.
  3. Assemble your bicycle and you can use the bicycle again.

Painting a bicycle with acrylic paint

This is perhaps the easiest way to paint your bike and create a...very easy way to use all your creativity mind. In addition, regular paint can be purchased at any hobby store.

What do I need?

  1. Primer
  2. Acrylic paint
  3. Clear varnish

How does it work?

  1. Start again with a layer of primer, so that you have a good base to paint over.
  2. Use all the colours you like, or stick to one acrylic colour. Again, remember that several thin layers give a better result than one thick layer.
  3. Now it is necessary toapply a layer of clear varnish. Regular paint rubs off when it gets wet and you naturally want to protect your clothing.
  4. Put your bike back together and you can use your bike again.
