Howcan you paint with shaving cream?
Basically there are two different ways you can paint with shaving foam, which we would also like to introduce to you in this article. You decide which of the two techniques you want to try. Of course you can also try both. With the first technique you literally paint, using your hands and fingers as well as the classic brush. The second technique gives a nice coherent effect, which is then transferred to paper or cardboard. You can read more about how this works below. With the second technique, interesting motifs can be created using stencils. This is more complicated and extensive than the other twoideas, and therefore it is more suitable for adults or older children.
Paint canvas pictures with shaving foam
The first way to paint with shaving cream is to use it as paint. For this you make the paint yourself, which you then use to paint. You can simply paint paper, but also cardboard or a real canvas. Use your hands and, if you are not using finger paint, gloves. You will need the following things:
- Shaving foam
- Finger Paint
- Colorant or acrylic paint
- Gloves (if using acrylic paint)
- Container for the paint (cup or muffin tin)
- Wooden sticks, straws or other things for stirring
- Waterproof surface (e.g. baking paper).

Place shaving cream in each container, then colour them with different colours. The more colour you put in, the stronger the colour will be. Do not use too much foam so that you can still stir well. The colours can then be used with a brush (or with your hands if you paint with shaving cream and finger paint) to create beautiful images on paper. If you choose this technique for painting with shaving foam, you can use it to show your children how to mix different shades from the three basic colours. This way they learn something new and have fun at the same time.
Painting patterns with shaving foam - Instructions andrequired materials
You can also make patterns with the foam and colours. This is the other technique to make beautiful paintings with shaving foam. The materials you need for this are almost the same as for the instructions above and are as follows:
- Shaving foam
- A baking tray
- Straws for stirring
- Glitter (optional)
- Waterproof surface
- Paper or cardboard
- A small piece of cardboard, a ruler or a spatula.

To use shaving foam this timepaint, fill a baking tray with the foam. Then you can sprinkle different colours over it in any way you like. Choose shades that you like and combine as you like. You can also add glitter to it. Then stir and mix everything together. You can make different patterns. Experiment with colours and patterns! Once you're happy with the pattern, take a sheet of paper (or cardboard, as it won't curl even when damp) and gently place it on top of the shaving cream. You can also press it down a bit.
Now carefully remove the paper or cardboard and leave the foam on the sheet for about 3 minutes so that it can absorb the colours. Then scrape off the excess foam with the small cardboard. Only the beautiful pattern remains. Now you can mix a little again or add new colours and create a new picture.
The finished marble slabs are great as a base for other crafts. Let the colours dry thoroughly and you can continue painting on them. These patterns are also very suitable for DIY greeting cards. Instead of A4 size, use regular A5 cardboard. Or use envelopes! Your kids will definitely come up with something fun to do with thefinished photos.
While you're experimenting with colours and shaving cream, why not paint a pretty picture in the foam instead of a marble pattern? These can be simple flowers and other motifs, or more complicated landscapes. When you then place the sheet of paper or cardboard on the foam, exactly this painted image is transferred, which is a fun and interesting alternative to the first technique.
Designing motifs with templates
Older children and adults can also create beautiful motifs while painting with shaving foam in kindergarten. Of course you canAlso try this with younger children, but you have to help them. Choose any motif and cut it from a sheet of paper to make a template. You can do this with a hobby knife on a suitable surface. Then prepare the shaving cream for marbling. Now place the stencil on the foam and a whole sheet of paper on top. The foam and the colours are thus transferred to the paper only in the shape of your motif.
Let the colours work for a while and remove the excess foam from the paper. The video below shows you how to work with the template. Alternatively, you can place the stencil on the sheet of paper and then use a ruler, spatula or similar to pick up some coloured shaving cream and smooth it over the stencil.
As a finishing touch, you can really let the children dig into the foam. When the weather is nice in the summer, you can play outside with the shaving foam. Then you don't have to worry about your furniture. Painting with shaving foam is not only suitable for kindergarten. You can also use this idea if you have theare celebrating a child's birthday and are looking for an interesting activity for the little ones. However, do not forget to warn the parents in advance so that they can send suitable clothing if necessary. The children can then keep the finished shaving cream stickers as a souvenir to take home.
As you can see, the variations for painting with shaving foam are numerous. All it takes is a little imagination, of which most children have enough, guaranteed to create beautiful masterpieces. You don't even have to have a talent for painting to create beautiful and effective paintings. And the best part is that every paintingis truly unique, because no two will be the same.
