Painting pottery - We explain how it works

Painting pottery

If you have baked your own tableware or vases, it is time to move on to the nextstep - painting your ceramics.

To paint your own pottery, you don't necessarily have to make pottery in advance. You can also just grab plates that you no longer like or buy them at the flea market. You can quickly transform boring tableware into real eye-catchers.

We'll tell you what to look out for and give you ideas for your decorations.

What do you need to paint pottery?

The great thing about this hobby is that you really don't need much to make beautiful things and get creative. You need special markers or paint to paint potterynecessary. In our opinion, it's easier and more fun with brushes and paint. But of course you can also work with markers.

When you work with paint, there are some techniques that work very well and give beautiful results.

Painting pottery - explained step by step

Pottery Painting - Step 1: Cleaning

Before you paint the tableware pieces, you should clean them very well. There should be no grease residues on it. To be on the safe side, take some methylated spirits and wipe the dishes clean with it. Then it will definitely be clean and the paint will hold beautifully.

Tip: The spirit is also very suitable for removing unwanted paint splashes on the board.

Pottery Painting - Step 2: Design

Now the creative work begins. Transfer the basic shape of your object onto a piece of paper. Place the object on the paper and trace the edge with a pencil.

Now you can start drawing thedrawing on this surface.

Painting Pottery - Step 3: Painting Over the Design

Now take a piece of paper and cut it into the same shape. Take the crockery and first place the paper on it and then the design you drew. Now you can draw your design again.

Pottery Painting - Step 4: Tracing

Now that your design is on the crockery, it is easy to trace it with the pencils or colours provided. Of course, there is nothing to stop you from drawing directly on the tableware.

Ceramic Painting - Step 5: Drying and Firing

Before the paintings can be washed in the dishwasher, they must first be dried and baked. Normally the paint needs to dry for about 4 hours and then in your oven for about 90 minutesbe set to 160°C.

Frequently asked questions

Paint pottery by hand. For tiles or large pieces of pottery, use latex paint, acrylic paint or epoxy paint. For projects such as painting a tiled wall or a ceramic vase, a liquid acrylic paint that you can apply by hand is recommended.

Bright shades such as violet, pink or green make porcelain painting, which seems old-fashioned to many, much more vibrant. Another tip is to paint with acrylic paint. Lace patterns in particular look great on porcelain and become real eye-catchers.
